Dental Hygienist – Roles and Responsibilities
(Serving both Denti-Cal and PPO Patients)
Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform dental cleanings (prophy, scaling, root planing) according to patient needs and insurance coverage.
- Take and evaluate digital X-rays as per insurance guidelines (including D0210, D0274, D0330 for Denti-Cal).
- Complete periodontal charting and gum evaluations.
- Apply preventive care treatments such as fluoride and sealants, ensuring documentation for both PPO and Denti-Cal billing.
- Administer local anesthesia or nitrous oxide as allowed by licensure.
- Identify and communicate suspected dental caries, periodontal disease, or other conditions to the dentist.
Documentation & Compliance
- Chart all services in Eaglesoft, including procedure codes based on PPO and Denti-Cal requirements.
- Ensure documentation supports all Denti-Cal requirements for scaling/root planing, prophy frequency, and X-rays.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control standards.
Patient Communication & Education
- Educate both Denti-Cal and PPO patients on oral hygiene practices and preventative care.
- Explain procedures and benefits clearly, noting differences in insurance limitations or coverages.
- Encourage recall appointments and proper follow-up care.
Insurance Coordination
- Confirm eligibility and understand differences in frequency/limitations (e.g., prophy once every 6 months for PPO, every 12 months for Denti-Cal unless medically necessary).
- Assist front desk with notes needed for prior authorizations or claims.
- Note any exceptions or justifications in chart notes (e.g., medical necessity for fluoride in adults on Denti-Cal).
Sterilization & Maintenance
- Disinfect operatories before and after each patient.
- Sterilize instruments following infection control protocols.
- Track and report needed hygiene-related supplies.
Team Collaboration
- Participate in daily huddles and communicate with front desk on schedule flow.
- Support doctor exams and help guide patients through treatment plans.
- Coordinate with front office team for scheduling based on allowable procedures per insurance plan.
