JOB OVERVIEW -Under the general administrative supervision of the Health Services Bureau Chief, The Lead Dentist directs the dental program for offenders in the Montana DOC Adult Institutions, Community Corrections and Juvenile Corrections. This position oversees the permanent, and contractual dentists practicing in an institution. This position determines and directs the scope of dental services provided to offenders by: determination through prior authorization, all emergent and non-emergent diagnostics, consultations and oral surgery procedures requested by health services within the Department; monitoring the practice of dentists, dental contractors, dental hygienists, and dental assistants; development, implementation, and approval of policies, procedures, and protocols concerning the dental care of offenders. This position is also the liaison with off-site care providers determining adequacy and appropriateness of dental service delivery. This position provides direct dental care to patients.
The DOC Lead Dentist shall comply with the Department’s administrative rules, the agency’s policies and procedures, and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare Standards.
- Examine individuals and diagnoses their dental/oral conditions, prescribes and carry out appropriate dental treatment.
- Make models and measurements for dental appliances, such as dentures, partials, and bridges.
- Meet at least annually with contractual dental providers to review contract compliance, establish terms for new contracts, and resolve problems.
- Formulate and monitor policies, procedures and practice guidelines to assure delivery of quality dental care to offenders in state correctional facilities consistent with community standards of practice.
- Provides dental peer review for fellow dental professionals annually.
- Serves as dental chair on administrative meetings as well as Dental Review committee.
- Responsible for the hiring, firing, performance management, etc. for dentists and dental hygienists.
- As directed by the Health Services Bureau Chief, performs other related and or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
