Position Summary:
The purpose of the position is to perform general and limited specialized dental services and preventative dental procedures in the treatment of patients at the health center.
Duties:
- Responsible for the delivery of basic dental services to the local community and insure adequate access to dental care
- Serves as a dentist responsible for examining, diagnosing, and treating commonly encountered dental diseases and dental health problems
- Makes oral and radiographic examination of the oral cavity and diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions
- Performs restoration of simple and compound cavities with standard and prescribed material.
- Administers t op i ca l and local anesthesia as indicated
- Performs single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth.
- Removes unerupted and impacted teeth; residual root tips and teeth with exposed roots
- May occasionally perform difficult oral surgery such as extraction of an impacted tooth where there is a compelling aspect, a difficult uvulectomy in connection with fitting dentures or other appliances or other difficult dental procedures
- Practices prosthetic dentistry by studying the patient’s mouth to determine type of restoration required; taking oral impressions and bite registrations for crowns, bridges, and dentures, trying temporary setups in patient's mouth and fitting and inserting the finished appliances.
- Performs uncomplicated root canal therapy; scaling of calculus and curettage; treating mouth and gum infections; and recognizes symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and referring cases for medical diagnosis and consultation
- Performs routine restorative procedures such as amalgams, resins and stainless-steel crowns on pediatric dental patients. Fabricates and places fixed passive space maintainers where indicated.
- Removes localized foreign bodies from gingival tissues and alveolar sockets
- Performs prosthetic work involving complicating conditions such as lack of bone support for dentures, substantial change in oral formations and surgery on the bone and tissue in the supporting formation structure for the teeth
- Applies corrective treatment in cases of abnormal formation where proper occlusion is difficult to attain
- Performs limited root canal therapy on both children and adults
- Plans and executes community dental health programs for oral disease prevention and patient education
- Many of the patients present actual or potential behavioral problems that require skills in patient management of the part of the dentist
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited dental school within the United States.
- Must be licensed as a dentist in Nevada or a dentist assigned to RSIC by the USPHS/IHS under the USPHS Commissioned Corps or Civil Service System.
- Must be able to work in a diverse minority environment
- Must provide evidence of a recent Infectious Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) test showing ONE of the following: 1) a negative Mantoux skin test 2) a negative chest x-ray or 3) a statement from a physician confirming freedom from TB.
