For Dental Hygienists seeking a truly unique career path: The U.S. Navy is currently offering a new, limited-time pilot program to join as a Hospital Corpsman specializing in Dental Hygiene (HM/DH). As part of this pilot program, a limited-time $20,000 signing bonus is also available. Qualified candidates may be eligible for advanced entry paygrades, recognizing their professional credentials:
• E-4 (Petty Officer Third Class): Candidates with an Associate Degree from a CODA-accredited Dental Hygiene program can enter at this advanced paygrade, with an earning potential of up to $104,000 annually*.
• E-6 (Petty Officer First Class): State-licensed Dental Hygienists may qualify for entry at this higher paygrade, with an earning potential of up to $116,000 annually*.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate preventive and therapeutic dental care under the supervision of a Navy Dental Officer.
- Perform periodontal therapy, including scaling and root planing.
- Take, process, and interpret dental radiographs.
- Apply fluoride, sealants, and other preventive and chemotherapeutic treatments.
- Provide critical oral health and nutrition education to patients.
- Document patient care, clinical readiness, and treatment outcomes with precision.
- Uphold the highest standards of infection control and support clinical quality assurance protocols.

• Direct Procurement Enlistment Program (DPEP) Pilot: This new initiative is designed to align with civilian industry standards and reward your expertise from day one.
• Earn up to $104,000* annually when you enlist as an E-4 (Petty Officer Third Class): Candidates with an Associate Degree from a CODA-accredited Dental Hygiene program can enter the Navy at an advanced paygrade.
• Earn up to $116,00* annually enlist as an E-6 (Petty Officer First Class): Candidates who are already state-licensed as a Dental Hygienist can enter at an even higher paygrade, recognizing their professional credentials.
• Advanced Training: After initial accession, you will be eligible for specialized training and may compete for the advanced HM Dental Hygiene Program (NEC L35A) to further enhance your skills.
ENTRY PATHWAYS
• Licensed Civilian Pathway (DPEP Pilot): If you are a graduate of a CODA-accredited Dental Hygiene program and hold a current state license, you may be eligible to enlist directly at the E-6 paygrade.
• Recent Graduate Pathway (DPEP Pilot): If you are a recent graduate of a CODA-accredited program but are not yet licensed, you may be eligible to enlist at the E-4 paygrade.
• In-Service Pathway: Current active-duty or Reserve Sailors may apply for the HM Dental Hygiene program after meeting specific career milestones.
EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
- Earn an Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene and qualify for state licensure exams through the Navy’s formal training program.
- Pursue a Bachelor’s degree or higher with Tuition Assistance and the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
- Gain funding for industry-recognized credentials and certifications through the Navy COOL program.
- Receive ACE-recommended college credit for all formal Navy training.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited Dental Hygiene program.
- Must meet Navy medical, legal, and fitness standards, including normal color perception and vision correctable to 20/20.
- Provide a recommendation from your program director.
- Complete interviews with clinical supervisors.
